The European Commission announced Wednesday it plans to investigate the proposed merger between cement giants Cemex and Holcim with a focus on how the deal would affect the Spanish market.
Mexico’s Cemex plans to acquire Switzerland-based Holcim, a deal that has already been cleared by national regulators in the Czech Republic. The Commission launched an investigation last October regarding how the merger affects western Germany.
According to the Commission, the investigation into the Spanish market follows a referral request from the nation to investigate the deal, despite the transaction not meeting the threshold for an automatic merger review.
The EU authority now has until September 5 to rule on the deal.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the EU would probe the merger between Lafarge and Holcim. The updated version reflects the correction.
