The European Commission is set to focus on food cartel crackdowns, according to its cartel chief, say reports.
Eric Van Ginderachter, the Commission’s director of cartels, told media last week that collusion in the food industry will be a top focus for the regulator in the coming months.
A market inquiry was launched last year to probe the food retail industry; the Commission recruited various law firms to conduct the study, which aims to determine which factors, if any, have harmed competition in the market.
According to reports, the authority is in the process of probing an alleged mushroom cartel. Various EU member states have similarly conducted their own food-related competition probes.
