EU: Samsung said to close in on Apple patent settlement

 |  December 11, 2013

Two unnamed sources told reporters Wednesday that Samsung is closing in on a settlement with Apple and other rivals as the European Commission is likely to approve of Samsung’s offer to cease litigation against competitors using Samsung patents.

According to the sources, only minor changes to Samsung’s offer are needed, and the Commission is set to reveal that feedback on the proposal has been largely positive.

The Commission first opened a case against Samsung as it focuses on excess litigation initiated by patent holders. Samsung and Apple have been engaged in so-called patent wars in various nations, launching law suits against each other for use of each other’s smartphone patents.

The Commission has been investigating the matter for nearly two years. If Samsung reaches a settlement it will avoid a hefty fine by regulators.
