France: EU probes TV operator Numericable state aid

The European Commission announced Wednesday the launch of an investigation into staid aid given to cable television operator Numericable between 2002 and 2006. The aid for the state-owned firm was part of a project in the country to transfer public cable television infrastructure; the aid gave Numericale free infrastructure that, according to the Commission, gave the company “a huge economic advantage over its competitors.” The regulator said in a statement it would now look into whether that aid violates EU competition law.
