Germany: EU flexes muscles, blocks telecom price hikes

As the European Commission looks to impose its strength within the telecommunications market across the continent, reports have emerged that Germany’s plans to increase fees charged by various telecom operators have been blocked by the regulator. Germany’s telecommunications authority, BNetzA, initially suggested the price hikes that would allow operators like Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone to charge more for phone calls. But congruent with plans to harmonize the market across Europe, the Commission blocked the price-hike initiation and issued a statement this week reiterating efforts to offer a “single market for telecoms for all EU citizens.”
