In an article set for publication Wednesday, reports say Germany’s antitrust watchdog is planning strict scrutiny of deals involving German units of KPN and Telefonica. The German Cartel Office’s president Andreas Mundt told German newspaper FAZ that the tie-up is “clearly” a case for the watchdog in Germany, not the European Commission. Last month Netherlands-based telecommunications conglomerate KPN announced pans to divest its Germany unit E-Plus to Telefonica in Spain in an $11 billion deal. But the transaction hit a development when, shortly after, Mexico’s America Movil announced plans to acquire the rest of the 70 percent of KPN it does not already own. America Movil said it is still debating whether to support the sale of E-Plus.
