Hungary: EU approves millions in funding to close anticompetitive mine

The European Commission has approved for more than $187 million in funding to shut down what it calls an anticompetitive mine in Hungary. The mine, called the Markushegy Mine, is scheduled to close by 2014. In a statement, Commission VP Joaquin Almunia said that the funding will help those affected by “such painful restructure” and will also mitigate the environmental impact of the mine on its surroundings.
