India: Public sector insurers face CCI crackdown

The Competition Commission of India has reportedly ordered an investigation into the General Insurers (Public Sector) Association for anticompetitive behavior, industry experts say.

According to reports, the probe marks a turnaround for the CCI, which in 2010 found little concern among a joint venture plan between the GIPSA and another partner to set up a common third party administrator.

Now, however, the CCI says that the proposed TBA joint venture would harm competition as the insurers that are part of the GIPSA hold a dominant position in the health insurance market. A joint venture, the watchdog said, would hold the largest market share and is at risk for abusing its market dominance.
