Japan: Widespread bid-rigging probe leads to reported raids of 50 power companies

About 50 companies have been searched by the Japan Fair Trade Commission in its widespread investigation into alleged bid-rigging taking place in power companies. The probe is to determine whether the power companies, which include Kinden Corp and Kansai Electric Power Co., rigged bids in the process of selling contracts for construction work and maintenance checks of cables and towers. Sources say that the companies being investigated predetermined the winners of contracts for maintenance and construction projects for several years, doing so through meetings with the winning bidders prior to the actual bidding.
