The European Commission has approved Kemet’s proposed acquisition of a controlling stake in NEC Tokin. U.S. company Kemet manufactures capacitors; Japan-based NEC Tokin produces electronic devices and components. NEC Corporation and Kemet will have joint control over NEC Tokin.
The Commission investigated the transaction’s potential effects in the EU market for the supply of tantalum and solid aluminum capacitators. It found that the acquisition would lead to only a limited increase in market share and that sufficient competitors remained in the market. These determinations allayed the Commission’s concerns with the vertical links created by the deal.
