Nigeria: Government petro deregulation is unconstitutional, says High Court

A High Court in Nigeria’s capital has ruled that the government must regulate the nation’s petroleum industry and declared a deregulation of the sector as “unconstitutional” and “illegal.” The case arose from a previous lawsuit initiated by a lawyer in 2009 who argued against the government’s decision to not fix prices of petroleum, and that pricing should not be the decision of individuals. In his quest to prevent the industry’s deregulation, the lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, has sued the Minister of Petroleum Resources as well as the Attorney General of the Federation.
