Slovakia: Supreme Court upholds 2006 construction cartel fines

Slovakia’s Supreme Court upheld a 2006 decision by the nation’s Antitrust Office that ordered six construction firms to pay fines for forming a cartel, a ruling that became valid March 20.

    The construction firms were found guilty of violating competition law by forming a cartel to rig the bidding process for highway contracts. The companies appealed the fines, with at least one company, Doprastav, arguing that it does not have sufficient funds to pay the fine, arguing that its restructuring plan should be accepted so as to not require a full payment of the fines.

    But the Supreme Court upheld the fines last year, and with the validation of the ruling, the companies have 30 days to pay the fine.
