South Africa: Commission stays mum on butter dawn raids

 |  April 22, 2014

South Africa’s Competition Commission has declined to reveal the kinds of documents the regulator took during dawn raids conducted at offices of Unilever and Sime Darby Hudson & Knight, say reports, but the authority noted that the searches were part of its investigation into the edible oils and margarine market.

Reports say the Commission said “it is too early” for it to reveal the exact nature of the taken documents but announced earlier this month that it plans to acquire electronic documents for analysis as part of the probe.

In a statement, the Commission would only offer confirmation that the searches would hopefully help authorities “to determine whether or not Unilever SA and Sime Darby have indeed engaged in collusive conduct.”
