Spain: Against EU wishes, new ‘super-regulator’ CNMC opens doors

The new so-called “super-regulator,” the National Commission for Markets and Competition, officially opened its doors and began operations this week, absorbing the powers of the nation’s telecommunications regulator the CMT, as well as the competition authority, energy watchdog and other, smaller regulators.

The new CNMC will not absorb every power of the smaller regulators, however; some of those powers will fall under the industry ministry.

The establishment of the new regulator, which began operations on October 7, is highly controversial as the European Commission advised against it, going so far as to threaten legal action against its creation.

EU telecom chief Neelie Kroes sent a letter to Spain’s minister of industry to express concerns over the loss of the CMT’s power and independence.
