Toshiba Tec gets EU green light for IBM’s retail store solutions business

The European Commission has approved Toshiba Tec’s proposed acquisition of IBM’s retail store solutions business. Toshiba Tec is a subsidiary of Toshiba. Retail solutions are used for sales transactions; examples include point-of-sale systems, PC-on-cash-drawer systems, and self-service-systems. Despite the overlap in the retail solutions sector created by the transaction, the Commission cleared the deal because strong competitors would remain in the market, the two are not close competitors, and switching costs for customers are low.
