U.S.: DOJ probe into seed sector ends

A longstanding investigation into Monsanto Co and its soybean genetic traits business has ended, according to the Department of Justice. The probe began in January 2010 to inquire about complaints filed against Monsanto that the company had withheld access to a product in order to sell a pricier product to farmers. Monsanto sells a patented Roundup Ready soybean trait, a genetically-modified soybean seed that can survive herbicide treatments. Its patent expires in 2014, though at the time the investigation began the company said it would continue to allow farmers access to the first-generation product even after the newer generation came out.
