U.S.: Meeting planned to assess patent-hoarders’ potential threat to tech competition

A meeting is scheduled next month for the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to discuss whether specialized patent-holding firms are disrupting competition in the tech sector. The two authorities are inviting involved parties to Washington for an informal hearing, where the experts expect tech companies to promote tougher review of patent issues that arise in front of the regulatory bodies, describing some practices of patent-holding firms as a “threat to innovation.” Some patent firms are known to “horde” patents, only to sell them at an increased cost but not to develop new technological devices.
