UAE: Rival telcos poised to open fixed-line competition floodgates

 |  January 8, 2014

The United Arab Emirates’ two telco operators, Etisalat and du, are reportedly set to open their doors to fixed-line competition.

The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announced this week that the companies have completed necessary preparations to supply fixed-line services across the Emirates. While there are only two operators competing, the TRA says this has proven beneficial to consumers.

According to TRA Director General Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, the two companies “are very aggressive in terms of competition.” He added that price offerings in the UAE are “one of the best in the GCC countries” thanks to the tough rivalry.

Reports say the process has been in the works for more than three years.
