UK: Despite appeal, review of Ryanair, Aer Lingus takeover to continue

 |  April 26, 2013

Despite Ryanair’s attempts to appeal a review of the airline’s recent takeover of 30 percent of Aer Lingus’ stake, the UK Supreme Court has announced its denial to review the lower court’s decision that allowed the investigation to proceed. According to the UK’s highest court, set in London, the appeal did not have an “arguable point of law of general public importance,” and reinforced the European policy that initially blocked the deal, once the European Commission found it to be anti-competitive. The Commission found that the transaction risked increase fares for consumers and reduced consumers’ choice for flights departing from Ireland. The controversy concerning the two airliners has dragged on since 2006; its most recent bid to acquire Aer Lingus was denied last December.
