UK: Forced divestitures could create new cement competition

 |  November 28, 2013

The UK’s Competition Commission is reportedly considering requiring construction giant Lafarge Tarmac to divest several of its units, a regulation that would lead to the creation of a new competitor in the UK cement industry.

In addition to requiring Lafarge Tarmac to sell two of its granulated blast furnace slag facilities, reports say the authority is considering the forced sale of Hanson plants as well. According to the Commission, the sales would need approval from the regulator, and the buyers cannot be current UK cement companies.

Earlier this year, the Commission found concerns regarding competition within the cement industry. It first asked for feedback on the provisional proposals by last October, but will not publish its official report until next January.
