UK: Sluggish market means more work for OFT

City law firm RPC has reported a 5 percent spike in complaints filed to the Office of Fair Trading over anticompetitive behavior in 2012, resulting the highest number of complaints since 2001. Reports say 2,165 complaints were issued to the authority by consumers and companies, and RPC says the rise may be due to sluggish economic growth; tough times may result in individuals taking a closer look at competitor practices. It’s a trend, says the law firm, that means businesses are keeping an eye out for competitive malpractices in their market. The OFT will be combined with the Competition Commission in 2014 to create the Competition and Markets Authority.
