US: Blue Cross Blue Shield racks up 27 antitrust suits

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, along with its 28 member health plans, have reportedly racked up at least 27 antitrust lawsuits against the entities. The lawsuits claim a conspiracy among the BCBS conglomerate to break-up the US healthcare market geographically to avoid competing with each other. Reports say the plaintiffs argue the licensing agreements that the insurer has with member plans is anticompetitive and a violation of the Sherman Act, among other antitrust laws; they are seeking to prevent the competition restriction in certain states, as well as three times their actual damages. BCBS held a legal status conference last Thursday concerning the cases.
