US: Dish approaches DirecTV with merger in mind

 |  March 27, 2014

Dish Network has reportedly approached DirecTV with talks of a merger of the two satellite companies as the companies are rumored to be looking at how to compete with the proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner.

Dish is said to have spoken with DirecTV CEO Mike White with a merger proposal, sources said. DirecTV is the nation’s top satellite television operator, while Dish is the nation’s number-two rival.

Such a merger would mirror Comcast’s $45 billion bid for Time Warner, first announced last month, which would combine close cable rivals. One source said that Dish is looking to stay competitive against Comcast, and a deal with DirecTV would be one way to do so.
