US: Grocer files federal suit against alleged milk cartel

 |  September 5, 2013

Hampton Foods filed a federal complaint against an alleged milk cartel, claiming dairy farms fixed milk prices by requiring participants to destroy dairy cows.

The allegations claim National Milk Producers Federation, Cooperatives Working Together, Dairy Farms of America, Land O’Lakes, Dairylea Cooperative and Agri-ark dba Cabot Creamery Cooperative colluded in the cow-destroying cartel.

The lawsuit was filed against the companies to seek damages for the firms’ engagement “in a continuing contract, combination and conspiracy” over the last eight years, according to court documents. The suit describes the group’s forced “herd retirements” to fix milk pries.
