US: NCAA ruling to be made in coming weeks

 |  May 21, 2013

A ruling on an antitrust case against the National Collegiate Athletics Association will be determined in the “next couple weeks,” according to US Judge Yvette Kane. The lawsuit was initiated last January on behalf of residents of Pennsylvania after the NCAA issued unprecedented sanctions against Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, fining the university $60 million and ultimately cut the number of scholarships offered for athletes. Plaintiffs agree the sanctions were a violation of the federal Sherman Antitrust Act. The NCAA had motioned to have the case dismissed on Monday; Judge Kane has now stated that she will rule on the case in the coming weeks.
