President Barack Obama will name Edith Ramirez as the Federal Trade Commission’s new Chairwoman, to succeed Jon Leibowitz, the White House said Thursday. Ramirez will not require confirmation from the Senate.
Leibowitz announced his resignation February 1.
Ramirez enters the position after being sworn in as FTC Commissioner on April 5, 2010. Prior, she was a partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP in Los Angeles where much of her focus centered on representing clients in areas of antitrust and unfair competition – her clients included The Walt Disney Company, Mattel Inc. and Northrop Grumman Corp.
As a native of Southern California, Ramirez continues to be involved in community activities. She was also an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP from 1993- to 1996, also in Los Angeles, and additionally clerked for the Hon. Alfred T. Goodwin from 1992 to 1993 in the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Ramirez graduated from Harvard Law School in 1992; she additionally holds an A.B. in history from Harvard University. She served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review while President Barack Obama served as the publication’s president. Ramirez also worked as Obama’s campaign director of Latino Outreach in the state of California.
