Oyster is known as the “Netflix of books” for offering unlimited access to more than 1 million titles for $9.95 a month. Now it’s competing with Amazon by selling millions of titles after striking a deal with every major publisher, which include Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. “We know that readers want to see all of their options and access every book — subscription and retail — in one place,” Oyster CEO Eric Stromberg said in a statement.
“With this launch, we’re pairing the best in subscription with the best in ebook retail to deliver a comprehensive offering for readers.” While people need the Oyster app for iOS, Android or Kindle Fire to read the books, they don’t need to be a subscriber to make purchases. Amazon probably isn’t too worried; it already lets Prime members choose from 800,000 books in its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
