US: Virgin scores after AA, US Airways agreement

 |  February 20, 2014

After American Airlines and US Airways agreed to divest some airport slots as part of an agreement to merge, reports say Virgin America announced Wednesday that it has snatched up some of those slots.

Virgin acquired eight slots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. American and US were required to divest the takeoff and landing locations in order to have their merger, creating the world’s largest airline, cleared.

Reports say Virgin beat out Spirit Airlines for the slots.

Bidding for divested slots began after the airlines and the US Department of Justice reached a settlement agreement, announced last November.
