Spain’s CNMC has issued new sanctions for Spanish media company Mediaset, totalling 49,263 Euros from a series of violations to the time limits set for hourly commercials and telemarketing content in the company’s TV networks, Telecinco, Cuatro and FDF.
This is the second time this year the company has faced similar charges. The violations are considered minor infractions of article 14.1 of Spain’s General Competition Law, which sets a time limit of 12 minutes per broadcast hour for commercials and publicity.
The watchdog determined that Mediaset, as parent company to the networks, should be responsible for their content due their position as a major actor in a ‘highly specialized’ industry, and as such should have access to “professional experts who should place maximum care in following the norms,” avoiding excessive commercial blocks and protecting the rights and benefits of viewers.
