iBeacons Catch a Ride On Taxi App

Taxi Magic, a ridesharing service that allows users to hail a cab via their phone, is rolling out a new service today that will allow registered users of the app to beam out, via Apple’s iBeacon technology, the referral code for the service to others.

The notifications are selective and are only targeted to those who have downloaded the app and have it open, but have never ordered up a ride. They don’t have to type anything in, and you get a $10 credit if end up calling a cab.

Push notifications aimed at guiding people to the service are just the beginning for Taxi Magic’s planned uses of iBeacon technology, notes Taxi Magic mobile developer Jeff Pharr.  The company is looking to further advance the system with the use of iBeacons to share fare payments, and putting iBeacons in vehicles so that people can pay from their rides using the app, even if they hailed the cab the low-tech way on the street.

Moreover, Pharr notes, this can all likely be done with minimal difficulty or cost to the user.

“There would be a nominal increase in battery usage during the time they are transmitting, but this should be negligible since you are only broadcasting for as long as it takes for someone to receive your referral code,” he said to The Verge.
