Spain’s competition regulator the CNMC has launched an appeal to telecommunication operators to present their services in a less “bundled” form, thus allowing users greater freedom of choice and, in turn, lowering their spending in telecommunications. “At the CNMC we would welcome greater freedom so that each person could design exactly the services they want,” said José María Marín Quemada, president of the CNMC.
According to the sector data included in a recently published report, Spain is still among the countries with the highest telecommunications costs in the EU. This is due, claims the CNMC, to the fact that operators tend to “bundle” mobile, landline, Internet, and television services. Consumers in Spain hire more “bundle” services than the EU average, with more than 12.2 million contracts for “Quadruple” or “Quintuple” services (including television and data and voice transmission).
Not using these bundled services would allow the consumer greater choice and freedom to search for the right product, price, and after-sales service, explains the CNMC. “We have seen with great pleasure that as reference operators increase, better services and more options are offered to consumers and prices go down,” the CNMC stated.
