US: FCC names Antitrust attorney to head Sprint, T-Mobile merger review

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has named David Lawrence to head up the agency’s review of the proposed takeover of Sprint by T-Mobile US. The companies filed for FCC approval earlier this month, and the regulator will have to decide whether the US is ready to go from four to three major mobile operators.

    Lawrence comes to the FCC from the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, where he served as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General. He joined the Front Office of the Antitrust Division in 2016, assisted the management of the division through the transition from the Obama to the Trump administration, and has focused on issues in the telecommunications and transportation sectors.

    Lawrence started at the Antitrust Division as an Honors Program attorney in the Telecommunications and Broadband Section. While there, he served as lead attorney for several complex investigations, the FCC said. He started his career in the judiciary, clerking for Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Richard J. Holwell of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
