Peru’s government has announced that Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, one of the largest construction companies in South America, will be banned from all future bids for public contracts after the company admitted to paying a series of bribes between 2005 and 2014.
Fernando Zavala, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, remarked on the importance of avoiding such a situation from repeating itself while announcing new mechanisms intended to prevent previously-sanctioned companies from participating in future contests. Odebrecht is believed to have paid out over $29 million USD in bribes to various government officials across the continent.
The Council also announced additional budget allocations for the Anticorruption Prosecutor. The organism’s main investigation, looking into those responsible for collusion in the contract for rebuilding the Interoceanic Highway across the country, will also look into several other construction companies. All existing projects will be monitored to ensure continuity, with sanctioned companies banned from seeking future contracts.
