UK: Antitrust body launches study into law services

The UK’s antitrust authority has launched a market study into whether civil legal services are affordable and whether the £30bn industry is providing an adequate service for consumers and small businesses.

    The Competition and Markets Authority will probe whether consumers in England and Wales have enough information to make informed decisions when they are using lawyers for matters such as buying a property, resolving disputes or getting advice on financial or employment matters, writes Lindsay Fortado.

    The agency said it will consider if they consumers are adequately protected if something goes wrong – and if law firms should have to pay redress as a result – and how regulation is impacting competition in the industry.
