China: Is using antitrust law as a weapon worth it?

The Chinese government has been criticized for selectively using its antitrust law to attack foreign companies to give an advantage to domestic firms. Since 2013, antitrust regulators have been stepping up probes and have issued fines totaling 3 billion yuan.

    China’s antitrust law, which has been in force for six years, was recently brought to bear against US chipmaker Qualcomm in the form of a US$975 million.

    To address the concerns of foreign companies, Beijing should make its law enforcement and legal processes more transparent by giving the companies access to facts and evidence collected during the investigations the paper concluded.
