India: CCI considers new e-commerce rules

As competition regulators in India investigate alleged anticompetitive conduct by several major online retailers, reports say officials are considering implementing new rules to govern the industry.

    Companies including Flipkart, Amazon, Xerion Retail and Rasper Infotech are all under scrutiny by the CCI following the Minister of Corporate Affairs’ request that federal officials probe the online retail marketplace.

    According to officials, “government in the Department of Consumer Affairs is considering inclusion of necessary safeguards for the protection of rights of consumers of technology-based marketing e-commerce, telemarketing, etc., as part o the proposed amendment in the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.”

    The CCI first launched its inquiries following allegations that the online retailers were selling products at below-market prices.
