UK: Hutchison Whampoa considers EE, O2 buy

China’s Hutchison Whampoa is reportedly considering an acquisition of UK wireless operators EE or O2 through its British asset 3 Group.

    According to reports, Hutchison Whampoa could submit a bid for either company by the end of the year. The news emerges in the same week BT said it wants to acquire both EE and O2 as well, but experts say an EE acquisition by Hutchison Whampoa would make more sense as the firms are already tied through a network sharing agreement.

    Reports add that a BT purchase of O2 would not likely face significant antitrust scrutiny.
