Shipping conglomerate Matson announced plans to acquire Horizon Lines assets in Alaska, an unsurprising move that revealed why the company had avoided a Horizon buyout in Hawaii.
According to reports, Matson holds a majority of the Hawaiian shipping market, and believed antitrust concerns would thwart any efforts to acquire Horizon in the state.
Instead, the Hawaiian arm of Horizon will go to Pasha, which reports say entered the market just one decade ago, compared with the more than 100 years of experience held by Matson.
Now, Matson’s takeover in Alaska is dependent upon federal antitrust review of Pasha and Horizon’s deal, reports say.
