EU: Etihad, Alitalia plead to Commission to save merger

Airlines Etihad and Alitalia have reportedly offered concessions to the European Commission in efforts to secure clearance for their proposed merger.

    The United Arab Emirates-based airline is seeking to acquire 49 percent of the struggling Alitalia. The Commission announced Wednesday that it would decide by November 17 on the deal.

    According to reports, the airlines have offered to divest airport slots on the route between Rome and Belgrade, unnamed sources.

    Etihad is in the midst of a takeover spree across Europe, say reports, having inked deals with Air Berlin, Virgin Australia, Jet Airways, Aer Lingus and Switzerland-based Etihad Regional.
