EU: Commission nixes probe into preferred Internet content delivery

More than a year after the European Commission launched an investigation into several telecommunications companies accused of abusing their market dominance, reports say the watchdog has abandoned the case.

    The Commission launched dawn raids in July of 2013 at Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Telefonica following a formal complaint by US peer Cogent Communications. Cogent accused the EU telcos of making unfair deals with Internet service providers to prioritize their content delivery.

    But in a statement offered Friday, the Commission said it has closed the case, noting that it “found no evidence of behavior aimed at foreclosing transit services from the market or at providing an unfair advantage of the telecoms operators’ own proprietary content services.”

    At the time of the raids, the Commission did not named the companies under investigation, but reports say the telcos confirmed they were being probed.
