US: FCC vows to combat wireless consolidation

The Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday that it will remain committed to combating consolidation within the wireless industry, a vow made just weeks after Sprint and T-Mobile abandoned their merger plans.

    According to reports, FCC chief Tom Wheeler spoke Tuesday at a conference held by wireless industry group CTIA. “We will continue to be skeptical of efforts to achieve scale though the consolidation of major players,” Wheeler said.

    Sprint and T-Mobile, the nation’s third- and fourth-place mobile rivals, were looking to merge to boost their competitive position against market leaders Verizon and AT&T. The companies abandoned their plans following “outspoken” criticism of the deal by authorities.

    In 2011, regulators sued to block a takeover of T-Mobile by AT&T.
