Authorities are reportedly planning to set up a new super-watchdog to regulate India’s communications industry, a move that could replace the current Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
Reports say the new regulator, to be dubbed the Communications Commission, would hold all of the powers of the current TRAI and additionally hold some powers of the Censor Board, the Competition Commission of India, the Department of Telecommunications, and more.
The proposal is outlined in a Communications Bill, an overhaul of all current telco laws in the nation.
Among the changes the laws would make include the replacement of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, and the establishment of the Communications Appellate Tribunal, to settle disputes in the industry, including competition conflicts.
