India’s Competition Appellate Tribunal may jumpstart an investigation into allegations of a coal cartel after a complainant filed an appeal of the Competition Commission of India’s original decision not to probe the matter.
A lawyer had initially filed a complaint with the CCI against three coal companies accusing the firms of colluding to rig project contracts. The CCI decided against investigating the case but one judicial member found the complaint worthy of investigation.
With that backing, the complainant filed an appeal to the Tribunal; now, say reports, the Tribunal has issued notices to the companies accused of anticompetitive conduct. A hearing will be held next month, reports say. The companies in question are Nair Coal Services, Karam Chand Thaper & Bros, and Naresh Kumar.
