France: EU orders Ryanair to pay back aid

The European Commission announced Wednesday that it has ordered Ireland-based budget airline Ryanair to repay France millions in state aid it received.

    According to reports, Ryanair has been ordered to pay aback about $13.5 million in state aid it received for operating at three smaller airports in France. Ryanair called the ruling “erroneous” and vowed to appeal.

    But the Commission said in its ruling that the aid gave Ryanair an unfair advantage over other rivals in France.

    Authorities are also reportedly eyeing aid given to Ryanair in Austria, though the Commission recently reviewed then cleared aid given to the airline by Germany.
