Bulgaria: Officials push watchdog merger forward

Bulgaria has continued the process to merge the nation’s consumer protection and antitrust watchdogs into a single entity as officials in Parliament pushed the proposal forward.

    The nation’s parliamentary Committee on Economic Policy and Tourism approved the proposed merger Thursday. The plan would combine the Commission on Consumer Protection and the Commission for Protection of Competition.

    according to reports, lawmaker Yordan Ysonev, MP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms party, initiated the proposed merger and championed the plan Thursday on the grounds that healthy competition is a prerequisite for effective consumer protection, thus the goals of the two agencies go hand-in-hand.
