EU: Intel to receive ruling on record antitrust fine appeal next month

Europe’s second-highest court will reportedly decide next month on US-based chipmaker Intel’s appeal of a record-breaking antitrust fine levied against the company by the European Commission.

    According to a court official, the EU General Court will make its decision regarding Intel’s $1.47 billion fine issued by the Commission in 2009 after regulators found the company offered anticompetitive rebates to personal computer makers for buying the majority of their computer chips from Intel instead of its rival Advanced Micro Devices.

    Further, the Commission also found Intel had paid Germany-based retailer Media Saturn Holding to only sell computers containing Intel computer chips.

    Intel appealed the fine, and a court official said the General Court will rule on the appeal June 12. Intel is seeking for a reduction in the fine or to have it thrown out altogether.
