Singapore: Watchdog considers options to open wireless market

Singapore’s Infocomm Development Authority is looking at ways to open up the nation’s wireless market to stronger competition by boosting consumer choice, according to reports.

    One way to do so is to allow Mobile Virtual Network Operators to offer Next Generation services to more adequately compete with Singapore’s top telco rivals.

    The operators, known as MVNOs, do not own infrastructure or spectrum, but buy services from the telcos at wholesale prices.

    While MVNOs mostly serve niche markets, the IDA is looking at ways to boost the competitive strength of the companies against those telcos.

    According to an IDA spokesperson, the regulator “wants to inject more competition in the mobile market, which would lead to lower prices and more innovative services. Niche markets could also be better serviced.”

    The regulator also suggested it could allocate more spectrum to meet growing wireless demands.
