    The firm has reportedly agreed to divest spectrum and customers onto a new competitor; some reports say that new operator would likely be UPC.

    The deal has been met with skepticism as an O2 acquisition would reduce the number of wireless competitors in Ireland. 3 Ireland, owned by Hutchison Whampoa, is following a move previously made by France’s Bouygues Telecom, which offered to divest spectrum to smaller rival Free Mobile to have its SFR merger approved. The deal in France has yet to conclude.

    3 Ireland is looking to acquire O2 Ireland in a $1.1 billion acquisition.
