Competition regulators in Germany are promoting a quick boost to the nation’s energy sector to improve competition following national elections, to be held in September.
Cartel chief Andreas Mundt offered an interview Wednesday promoting the expansion of current policy to promote such competition, rather than a complete overhaul of the system, and suggested three steps to do so: “reform the renewable support law as that is the most urgent, then look at potential supply gaps…and models how to organize power capacity reserves to mitigate them,” he said in the interview.
Mundt said the state should not mull a capacity market system until after 2020.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is seeking a third term, said she would explore ways to cap energy costs that result from fixed green power prices.
Elections are scheduled for September 22.
