Mexico’s Senate has cleared the way for six of seven nominees to head the nation’s new competition regulator, known as CFCE, while clearing seven additional nominees to head the nation’s new, separate telecommunications watchdog.
The Senate has reportedly cleared Alejandra Palacios Prieto to head the CFCE for the next four years; Palacios is an economist at the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology as well as a professor of industrial organization at ITAM, according to an emailed statement from the Mexico Federal Economic Comeptition Commission.
Further, seven nominees were also cleared to become the heads of the nation’s new telecommunications watchdog, a major step in the nation’s legislative efforts to overhaul competition in the market.
The new regulator, known as Ifetel, will be lead by Gabriel Oswaldo Contreras until 2020.
Reports say the new telco commissioners will likely work to break Carlos Slim’s dominance in the market through America Movil, and require the company to share infrastructure with competitors.
